Unfortunately this is not possible in version 0.5.6 of JFreeChart. But the good news is that another developer (Andrzej Porebski) has implemented this feature and it will be available in the next version of JFreeChart.
If you want to, you can check out the latest source code from the CVS repository on SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jfreechart) and see the changes that Andrzej has made.
