ATTN JFreeChart forum members; DO NOT REPLY TO SPAM POSTS

Post by RichardWest » Sat Oct 04, 2008 2:44 am

JFreeChart's forum has seen an uptick in the amount of spam forum posts in the past week. Spam forum posts are not uncommon for any forum, and JFreeChart's forum is better than most thanks, in part, to the effort of David Gilbert and myself deleting spam posts fairly rapidly.

If you see a spam post on the forum, please do not reply to it. Replying to a spam post is one mechanism the spam bots/scripts/etc are alerted that their spamming was successful. A successful spam bot is likely to spam again as has been the case recently.

Spam posts are really easy to identify since they fall into one or more of these categories:
  • new user
    username is entirely random
the language is either not English or not in a Latin typeset (usually displayed as a series of random characters)
the post says "Hack Again!?", "MESSAGE", or references XRummer (a spamming tool)
the post is on a topic completely unrelated to JFreeChart
the post is offering porn, financial advice, services, etc
    the post provides contact information
When in doubt if a post is just spam, ignore the post. Either David or I will delete the post in relative short order. Please do not respond to spam posts ever.

It seems spam bots start to reply to each other with different accounts :-(
See this forum post for example.

What is the point of the spam post if there no link or anything. Baffling.

It could be testing: see if some spam-bot works.
It could be collecting posts: new users are not allowed to post URLs (due to making spaming harder).
That's just a few items that came to my mind. There are probably others.

Isn't it possible to reduce the number of posts a user can make in a day? When looking at the posts of the previous days, it looks like both DoctorCamilla and DoctorWhatshisname posted around 25 pages of posts together in one day.

Just joined and the General section is almost completely filled with spam from the same user 'werlee'
I don't seem to have button to report posts, so thought I'd post here.

Code: Select all

Is this the right thread to collect Spam ?
No, it's not. There is a "report this post" icon in the right upper corner of every post. Use this instead!

thx,
