This could be made to work, once upon a time I had some AttributedString stuff working reasonably nicely for a client. I think I hesitated to commit it because of some bugs in the JRE that required workarounds, but there's a reasonable chance these have been fixed now. Alas, I don't have much time to dig up the code and test it...
