auto adjustment of TickUnits w/ various range values

Having trouble figuring out how to auto adjust the tick units w/ SegmentedTimeline. The problem I have is that query can return arbitrary range, e.g. could be within a single day, or over multiple days. By default it just seems to pick the largest interval, as opposed to the most appropriate interval. Can somebody help me out?
