Hi David,
Since you are now preparing the new version of JFreeChart, I have a suggestion for a minor improvement.
Zooming with mouse is very intuitive with JFreeChart - just select the area and it zooms in immediately. However, I noticed many users struggle to find the way to zoom out - they do not realize that going the opposite direction with the mouse will cause a full zoom out, because there is no visual clue for that action (no blue rectangle). I saw many users doing right mouse click and selecting Zoom Out -> Both Axes in the context menu, which is quite cumbersome. They are often surprised when I show them it is possible to zoom out using mouse.
It might be useful to add some visual indication when the mouse is dragged in the zoom out direction (e.g., a small "zoom out" icon appearing above the cursor).
