Multiple axes support buggy & Development of JFreeChart

Post by michael75 » Mon Sep 26, 2005 11:51 am

Hello all,

multiple axes support is a feature which i need for a project. Unfortunately there are many problems with this feature. For example wrong crosshair positions, wrong axis used for a curve when zooming in and out again and so on. I wonder if noone else uses this feature as I did not get any answer to my last post.

David, the project leader, seems to ignore public and private messages concerning this topic as well. There are many uncommented bugs and patches on the sourceforge page, so maybe David is just too busy. Not even an answer if contributions are welcome. There are 28 developers registered for the jfreechart project.

Somehow I get the feeling that the development of jfreechart is very slow or even worse, maybe jfreechart is a dying project. What are you thinking :?:

No, JFreeChart is not dying. It is fair to say that development has been slower in recent months (for a variety of reasons), but I'm confident that the momentum will pick up again. I enjoy working on the project, and fully expect to continue doing so for a long time yet.

Of course, there are some bugs and forum posts that have gone without answers for a long time. I certainly recognise that as a problem, but I think it will always be the case that demand for support (free support, anyway ) and bug fixes will always exceed the supply of volunteers willing to do the work.

I'll happily take criticism for how the project is being run, but please bear in mind the resource constraints we operate under. It's pretty easy to say how things "ought" to be done, it's another thing to actually deliver that.

Hello David,

first of all, thank you for your fast answer. It's great to hear that you will continue working on this project. I like jfreechart very much and I am willing to help in some parts. The problem is that if you don't find any core developer to discuss strategies etc. it's always difficult. That's why I asked if contributions are welcome. There are many developers registered at the sourceforge project. Are most of them inactive?

Please don't get me wrong. My intention was not to tell you how to do your job. I was just searching for any kind of contact with jfreechart developers.

What is the best way to submit contributions? Send a patch to sourceforge or mailing you or ... ? As i work only with one type of diagram it might be necessary to discuss a few things so that I comply with your architectural design ideas. Is there a chance for this?

Thanks again,
Michael

There is a developer mailing list on the SourceForge page. It isn't very active, but that can change.
