I used the BarChart applet at objectplanet.com by a Norwegian company with utmost satisfaction. It was easy to learn and it had great features. For instance, tool tips could be shown on each bar and one could double click on a bar and redirect the browser to a URL. I found this great applet after surveying all available applets (almost everyone by a US purveyor).
So what this has to do with Jfree? I want to believe that American technology is still the greatest. So I wanted to learn JFreeChart. I was directed to Cewolf. It took me several days on Cewolf to get a basic bar chart. There are too many configuration files and minor details to master. Except for Dave Gilbert no one answers the queries in these forums. It's like being a lone ranger.

American vs. Norwegian technology
American technology
What makes you think JFreeChart is American technology? Most of your problems seem related to differences between applets and servlet technologies. There are a lot of free examples available on this site and elsewhere. If you are too lazy to go and look for them or teach yourself about the relevant technologies, that is hardly the fault or anyone around here. No-one here owes you lunch.

Hello,
More of that, David Gilbert, lead and main and developer and father of JFreeChart lives in England... I guess he's even english !
As You mention, David spends a lot of time answering questions in forum. Well, I do not have so much patience as he does. I did answer some question but quick get bored by people not even using the search function in the forum. What do people think : how do I earn enough money to pay my flat and eat everyday ? By freely answering again and again the same questions when people do not want to spend a few hours to read the javadoc ?
Sorry... I'm getting angry ! And I certainly do not speak for you as I did not take a look at your questions on the forum.
However, your message is interesting because it points out two things :
- 1) JfreeChart is not easy to learn ; yes it its a programming library and not a standalone application as some may believe. Yes, it is not finalized yet (see roadmap topic), therefore API is still moving - which can cause lots of trouble when you have to update your code while upgrading JFreeChart library.
- 2) JFreeChart is worth it because it's free, and because there is a great and growing number of functionalities. It's not just a bar chart library !
In conclusion :
- 1) Yes, there is still plenty of work to do - any help will be appreciated -> instead of complaining, help to make improvements to the library by coding, submitting detailed Request For Enhancement (RFE) or bug case on the sourceforge project page.
- 2) Yes, the help to JFreeChart users should certainly be enhanced ; there should perhaps be more subforums to answer specific questions : How to, bug, Request for enhancement, JSP-Cewolf, Swing, and some summary documents to read before asking questions - like the 'tips and docs' of JFreeReport. However, this has to be mainly decided by David, who spends a huge amount of time working on JFC and needs obviously to earn some money.... For some more informations on this subject, please read this topic.
Regards,
Arnaud

This is a funny thread!
Murthy, you are free to select software packages any way you choose, but assigning a "nationality" to the technology hardly seems optimal. Why not just stick with the package that you have found to meet your requirements? Does it matter that it was developed in Norway?
If it matters to anyone (and it shouldn't) I am a New Zealander living in the United Kingdom.

Hi,
My apologies for sounding offensive to the hard workers in this forum and jfree. Here are some clarifications:
a) having lived in USA for two decades, I think here is an example where American technology doesn't rock
b) I chose JFreeChart because a number of posters on JSP forum at java.sun.com recommended it (you should acknowledge your sponsors
I am grateful for all your comments. As I see it, if I can avoid paying M$'s to Microsoft and her psychophants, I'm better off. Sorry, I don't have free time now to contribute (perhaps, after I get laid off, Iwill contact someone here
.
Regards
Murthy

I wasn't especially offended, but your apology is accepted.murthy gandikota wrote:My apologies for sounding offensive to the hard workers in this forum and jfree.
The USA has a lot going for it, but you shouldn't assume that the USA will be the best at everything. Have you tasted the beer in Belgium?murthy gandikota wrote:a) having lived in USA for two decades, I think here is an example where American technology doesn't rock
Individual posters at java.sun.com may have been nice to us, but the forum administrators are less accommodating. I don't contribute to their forums anymore.murthy gandikota wrote:b) I chose JFreeChart because a number of posters on JSP forum at java.sun.com recommended it (you should acknowledge your sponsors
