partial background color

Hello,

I think this might be a bit pushing it, but I am looking for a way to shade only a part of the background. For example, half the background will be white, and then the other half will be yellow. This will easily convey the message of time on the x-axis. Of course, this is in one chart. I am at a lost on how to proceed. Combine two charts? Extend a new renderer?
Any ideas will be much appreciated.

I think this was/is the purpose of the PeriodMarkerPlot class (for overlaid charts). If I had the time, I would convert this to a renderer...
